Fresh this summer: the garden seed collection. I am thrilled to present a new batch of work. Ten pieces made to look just like seed packets. Each of these have been growing in our tiny suburban garden with no other purpose than bringing more joy to our lives. I hope these paintings make you feel like anything is possible and that joy is quite possibly, right around the corner.
NEW PRINTS
The sunflower that comes in so many beautiful shades of yellows, oranges, and browns. I love that their size and shape can range so much from flower to flower. At the very first studio I rented with AE Creative, there were so many big and beautiful sunflowers out front. 11 NW Lava looks a little different these days, but the memory of the sunflowers lives on.
Cosmos were the first plants I found real success with in my garden (and then the next year they wouldn’t grow at all??). Regardless, they are one of my most favorites to draw! The flowers, that is. The leaves are less fun because they’re so dainty and delicate!
One year after Halloween I saved our jack-o-lantern seeds. After drying them out and then keeping in the fridge over the winter, I planted them the next spring and was absolutely astonished that they grew. What a delight! The next year I did something crazy and constructed arches in the garden and planted the seeds I’d saved from those cute Trader Joe’s pumpkins. They grew over the arch and made the most incredible pumpkin tunnel! I couldn’t believe it worked! After harvesting over 90 mini pumpkins last year I fully forgot to save any of the seeds lol. But I did save some from the blue pumpkin and that’s what we have pictured here in this painting. It’s chaos over here, obviously.
Marigolds are the real warriors of the garden fighting off all kinds of incests with the smells they put off. I’m sure there’s more science to it, but their superpower to fight bugs is all I need to know. They way they drop seeds at the end of the season is spectacular too. Collecting all those seeds was the reason I started painting this collection in the first place.
Three years ago I found one bright red poppy growing in the rocks at the edge of our property. I squealed. I was so excited that I transplanted it immediately to another part of the garden. That poppy did not survive the season. However, the seeds spread that fall and I now have more poppies than I know what to do with. I love the way they come up in places you don’t expect. Plant in the fall (let them get cold) and enjoy in the spring.
Shaking out poppy seeds from the pods is one of my most favorite childhood memories with my grandma.
Shasta Daisies! I love these classic white, bright, tall beauties and the way they make the garden feel alive.
Throat Coat is one of my favorite teas throughout the winter because it’s good and because I have small children who share their germs with me. I love how big and bold and sturdy this plant is and I get oh so excited every time I see a new one pop up in the garden.
Echinacea is one of those plants that’s just so stunning in person. I hope you get to have some bloom right in front of you someday.
Sometimes I can get them to grow, sometimes the bugs eat them, but when they do grow, I sure do love them and they make for one of the best cut flowers!
Before I knew anything about the plants in our yard, my friend Liz came over and pointed out a Feverfew plant. She said it was a good one and I trusted her. Every time I found one on our property, I transplanted it to a specific spot. They are incredible spreaders! They are now in most parts of our yard and I’m pretty thrilled with that!
Are they not stunning?! Foxgloves remind me of fairies and enchanted forests and twinkling lights. Pure magic.
